The meaning of the Scallop Shell

Regarding to the legend once upon a time a young peer rode towards the ship with which the body of Saint James was brought to Spain. Unfortunately he sank in the sea, but however was saved in a wondrous manner.
Once reaching the shore his entire body was covered with shells.

Since that time the scallop is worn as a sign of protection and distinctive mark of the pilgrims.

It is also the waymark of the Route of Saint James and you frequently find it on road signs, edgings and way crosses.

In former times the scallop was used by the pilgrim as a scoop and for drinking and eating purposes. Its sharp edges made it possible to be used as a cutting tool (the todays all-purpose tool).
